A DRAMATIC sea rescue operation was staged in 'horrendous' weather conditions off West Penwith coast yesterday afternoon.

The crew of 38-foot long fishing boat Little Waters alerted Penlee RNLI after the vessel started taking water.

The rescue took place just one mile south of Tater-Du lighthouse.

But despite southerly winds gusting at up to 40mph and a four-metre swell, the lifeboat was on scene in just half an hour and immediately attached a tow.

RNLI Coxswain Patrick ‘Patch’ Harvey said: “The most urgent action was to get the fishing vessel away from the shoreline. Once we got her under tow, she stopped taking in water because she was being kept head to wind and wasn’t rolling beam on to the sea anymore. We kept her like this for two miles and during this time the crew of the fishing boat managed to bail out some of the water that had flooded the fish room and the engine room.

“At 6.30pm we altered course for Newlyn, managing to get back an hour later when we put the fishing boat alongside and then used the lifeboat salvage pump to get the rest of the sea water out of the vessel.”
